Finch & Fen Educational Permaculture Gardens
Our goal is to provide an educational space to help folks learn about permaculture, invasive plants, gardening, herbalism, food preservation, and to just enjoy the company of others who have the same ideals about the world as each other.
About
The seeds for Finch & Fen were planted over 20 years ago, but it took about that long for the right conditions to allow them to germinate. Both Angie and Chance had dreams of creating a space that would not only provide food for their families and space for wildlife to thrive, but a space to create community for others who were yearning for a different way.
Angie has been a home gardener for over 20 years, and an herbalist for 15. For the past 10 years or so, she has been interested in permaculture and in 2023 received her Permaculture Design Certification through Midwest Permaculture. She has always had a passion for plants and listening to the way things naturally prefer to thrive in the world. That combined with her love for helping her fellow humans naturally led her to a space of providing education to others.
Chance has been gardening from the time he was a child. His grandmother had beautiful gardens and he spent his childhood learning from her. A self taught naturalist and avid learner, he absorbed everything he could about plants, insects, and other wildlife. He bought his farm in 2014 with a dream to create a lifelong impact on his tiny part of the world.
Angie and Chance met in 2022 and found that they had fairly aligned visions and immediately connected over a love of plants. Finch & Fen was finally able to germinate. After a year of dreaming about all the ideas and adventures they could have, they solidified everything into a cohesive and very real vision. Finch & Fen Permaculture.
At Finch & Fen you will find a variety of annual and perennial garden beds – all created a bit differently. This is multi-purposed. Some plants and micro-climates require different growing conditions. We also want to showcase different gardening styles and see what types of beds work best. We have sheet mulching/no till beds directly on the ground, raised beds, container gardens, hugelkultur beds, and low-till beds. We also have wild woodland gardens, micro-prairies, baby food forests, and a future orchard space.
